Is This Florida’s Most ‘Hurricane-Proof’ Home? How Hunters Point Avoids Flooding, Power Outages, and More in the Eye of the Storm

Realtor.com- When Hurricane Milton swept through Florida’s Gulf Coast last week, many had heeded the area’s evacuation notice and fled.
Yet some residents in the Hunters Point development in the tiny town of Cortez stayed put. After all, their homes had been built to be “hurricane-proof.”
Even so, Cortez resident Marshall Gobuty, CEO of Pearl Homes, the development company behind Hunters Point, encouraged residents to evacuate, concerned for their safety as the storm came in.
“The rain was coming horizontally. I’ve never seen rain come sideways, it was so strong,” he recalls. “We had 18 inches in an hour and a half. It was unbelievable; you couldn’t see in front of you. And I’ve been in Florida a while, so I’ve seen heavy rain. But honestly, this was beyond anything we think of.”
“The only thing that got really damaged is our coconut trees,” Gobuty says.
